Original costumes emphasized for awards contest following New Smyrna Beach Halloween Parade on Canal Street

NSB Hallowen parade shark boy Nolan Kirkland / Hedline SurferNEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The cool thing about the shark costume that netted a trophy for 1-year-old Nolan and his proud parents, Nicole and Mike Kirkland of Edgewater at the 2011 New Smyrna Beach Halloween parade was its originality.

The costume was a big hit since New Smyrna Beach is known as the Shark Bite Capital of the World. The young family left the parade with a trophy almost as big as the little shark boy.

"This is a great event for families," said Nicole Kirkland, who made the costume from $20 worth of materials she purchased at Target.

Canal Street will once again be the setting for little princesses and goblins along with parents and grandparents for the 40th annual New Smyrna Beach Halloween Parade & Costume Contest.

The parade will begin at 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, at the intersection of Orange and Canal streets, heading east for four blocks to the historic Chamber of Commerce building. Participants are encouraged to be in place by 3:45 p.m.

A costume contest will follow the parade on make-shift bleachers just west of the chamber building. Judging numbers will be distributed as each contestant enters the stage.

Only original costumes are eligible for judging. 

Prizes will be awarded in six groups: Ages 4 and under, 5 to 7, 8 to 11, 12 to 17 and 18 and over. A group costume prize also will be awarded. First- through fourth-place and best-recycled costume prizes may be won in all groups.
