Ribbon cutting held for expansion of Burns Sci-Tech in Oak Hill

OAK HILL -- School starts Monday in Volusia County and Burns Sci-Tech. in Oak Hill will be ready! Their huge new building was dedicated Wednesday, Aug. 15, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Dignitaries in attendance were Volusia County Chair Frank Bruno, County Council dist. 3 candidates Jim Hathaway and Deb Denys. Several of my colleagues were there, too, including Oak Hill Mayor Mary Lee Cook and fellow City Commissioners Kathy Bittle and Doug Gibson.

The new building will house up to eight additional classrooms and a new computer lab. The school will have approximately 380 students at the start of this year.

Kudos and thanks go out to all in the community who participated in getting this school ready for opening on time. Without the help of many citizens this could never have been accomplished.

Once again Oak Hill and its citizens have proven that we can do what many said couldn't be done. Congratulations and good luck Burns Sci-Tech.

Editor's Note: Commissioner and Vice Mayor Linda Hyatt and Douglas Gibson are non-partisan candidates on the Nov. 6 general elections ballot to be the next mayor of Oak Hill. Hyatt has written a blog for Headline Surfer well before she announced her intention to run. Gibson doesn't have a problem with it. It has been made clear to Hyatt the blog is not for self-promtion in this election and she understands that condition.
