'We shall overcome' ourselves

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The Bush administration's Christmas gift to America is a package of disaster.

Due to our foreign policy, the overall status of the United States among nations has diminished in esteem and respect.

Our country is currently striving to survive a tremendous downturn in our economy, regulations and oversight for the transactions and activity on Wall Street were either lax or non-existent.

Billions of dollars in support of our unfavorable war in Iraq has been wasted, in addition to the drastic loss of thousands of brave American soldiers killed or permanently injured. Our country is also committed to spending billions of dollars in providing medial care and assistance for thousands of veterans.

Our unemployment level is the highest it has been in many years and millions of jobs have been outsourced. Our foreign trade policy has done much to detract from our manufacturing outlook. We do not have a fair trade policy.

Little progress has been made in improving our national health-care programs. National security coverage still has many loopholes. There has been little progress in resolving illegal immigration.

The conflict in Afghanistan is developing into a major catastrophe; more assistance from the Euro-nations is imperative.

The outlook for recovery from all these crises will be difficult, but hopefully, conditions will improve with the incoming administration.

"We shall overcome."
