OAK HILL -- When a stolen car was torched, lighting up the night sky on Maytown Road near Interstate 95 and just west of the city limits, Oak Hill police were the first to respond.

The motor vehicle was reported stolen out of Orange County and left abandoned and on fire Aug. 4, Oak Hill Police Chief Guy Grasso said last night after a City Commission meeting.

"It's desolate out there," Grasso said. "It's not unusual for stolen motor vehicles to be dumped there."

Oak Hill police Sgt. Mike Ihnken was first on the scene on a mutual aid cal from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Speaking of stolen motor vehicles, Oak Hill has none this year and had five reported thefts last year, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Figures for this year with New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater were not readily available, but FDLE reports from last year show New Smyrna Beach had 47 stolen vehicles reported and Edgewater had 27.

Daytona Beach had the most stolen vehicles reported last year in Volusia County with 644, followed by the Sheriff's Office with 580, DeLand with 156 and Holly Hill with 127.

Port Orange had 58 stolen vehicles, Ormond Beach 52, South Daytona 48, Daytona Beach Shores 27, Lake Helen, 15, The Beach Patrol and Ponce Inlet 3 each and the DeLand barracks of the Florida Highway Patrol 2.

Volusia County as a whole had 1,855 reported stolen vehicles, acording to FDLE figures.
