NSB biker, 57, killed on I-95

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 57-year-old New Smyrna Beach man was killed Friday on Interstate 95, south of Old Dixie Highway when he lost control of his 1989 Harley-Davidson while northbound in the passing lane and was ejected 50 feet from his motorcycle, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

For some unknown reason William Wells lost control of his bike, which skidded on the
right shoulder of the roadway, traveled through the grass shoulder, overturned and came to final rest in the tree line. Wells was ejected from his motorcycle, which landed 50 feet from him, the FHP reported.

Death threats to Kosmas in wake of health-care vote forwarded to Capitol police

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Some people upset with Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas' vote in support of President Obama's health-care bill have threatened her and her family, her press spokesman confirmed Thursday night.

The threats, sent in anonymous e-mails and in hang-up calls and messages since her vote Sunday were forwarded to the Capitol police, spokesman Marc Goldberg said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Not content that the City Commission earlier this month voted to spend $7,500 for an updated appraisal on prime riverfront acreage the Angler's Yacht Club has under a longstanding lease with the city, Bouchelle Island resident Bill Koleszar stood alone Tuesday, again challenging the validity of the agreement and asking the city to go to court to take back the property.

Mayor Adam Barringer honored at S.E. Volusia County Golden Eagle dinner

Mayor Adam Barringer was the guest of honor at the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Southeast Volusia Golden Eagle Dinner on Saturday night at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Kosmas to host 'tele-town hall' on the health-care legislation she helped secure

(Washington, DC) - Fresh off her vote in favor of President Obama's nationalized health-care plan, first-term Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna (FL-24), will hold a telephone town hall from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday  to discuss the issue.

NSB's park advisory board to consider renaming a North Beach park in honor of the late Grayce Barck

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- City Commissioner Lynne Plaskett was the last visitor to see 82-year-old Grayce Barck before she died March 1 at the Southeast Volusia Care Center of Hospice of Volusia/Flagler.

Kosmas votes with majority in support of President Obama's health-care plan

WAHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach (FL-24), voted with the majority of Democrats as promised in favor of President Obama's health-care plan in the historic Sunday vote that included no Republicans and 21 other Democrats saying no as well.

Still, Kosmas, in her first term, justified her vote.

"With the passage of this fiscally responsible health care reform legislation, we have taken a significant step towards reducing the deficit, ending unfair insurance practices, lowering health care costs, and improving coverage for Central Florida's families, seniors and small businesses," Kosmas said in a written statement released by her press spokesman, Marc Goldberg after the House vote. 

Girl, 4, struck and killed on Daytona beach by motorist; toddler hit by car Tuesday in NSB recovering

DAYTONA BEACH -- A 4-year-old girl from England whose hand was being held by her uncle was struck and killed Saturday by a Lincoln Town Car while the two were walking on the beach in front of Sun Splash Park and the Volusia County Lifeguard Tower, the Florida Highway Patrol said. As if that wasn't bad enough, the motorist panicked and instead of hitting her brakes, hit the accelerator and ran the child over, the FHP said.
