Jean Myers, 85, of New Smyrna Beach, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008.
Ronald North Sr., 69, of Edgewater, a firefighter for the Turnbull Volunteer Fire Company in New Smyrna Beach, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Three local teens were arrested in a stolen car and a handgun recovered following a suspicious motor vehicle stop at 3 a.m. off 10th Street, New Smyrna Beach police reported.
The car was speeding and driving recklessly when cops caught up with it in the parking lot of the Newport Sound Apartments off 10 Street. Three teens jumped out of the car and ran and police caught up with them a short distance later with the help of canine units.
OAK HILL -- The victims in the noon Wednesday double-fatality crash at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Halifax Avenue were identified as 71-year-old Eunice Perkins and 70-year-old Mary Campaigue in their 70s, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 24-year-old man was arrested this afternoon on charges of robbing a woman at gunpoint and pistol whipping her the previous day near New Smyrna Beach.
James L. Smith Jr. faces a charge of armed robbery with a weapon for the daylight confrontation. The 33-year-old victim was treated at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach for her facial injuries and released the same day.
OAK HILL -- A midday crash at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Halifax Avenue turned deadly when a Dodge Caravan crashed into a Ford Taurus resulting in two deaths, police said.
For unknown reasons, the Dodge van stopped at the stop sign while heading west on Halifax , but then T-boned the Taurus, which was southbound on U.S. 1 passing whle passing under the yellow blinking light. Stop signs are posted on Halifax on both sides of US. 1. A vehicle the van also got caught up in the accident.
Phew! I’m glad that Christmas is finally over. I feel like ran a race in past couple of months and then in a flash it was over with the exception of pieces of wrapping paper, bows and scotch tape strewn everywhere and dirty dishes piled in the kitchen sink. Talk about a let down.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A man who police suspect tried to ram one of their patrol cars during an attempted arrest is on the loose.
EDGEWATER -- The Friends of the Library will have a book sale in the Edgewater Public Library auditorium from 1 - 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30; and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.
The sale will include hardcover books, paperbacks, audio books, DVDs and magazines, said Pat Kuehn, Volusia County spokeswoman.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A Miami woman was killed and one of her two children critically injured early this morning after she apparently fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 95 and wandered into the grassy median a mile south of the State Road 44 interchange and twice over-corrected her steering, which caused the vehicle to roll over several times, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
