It was the day of school for Ray Catheline's little princess, Olivia, who entered kindergarten at the Buns Sci-Tech Charter School in Oak Hill. Big brother, Nicholas entered second grade.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Robert Lott was still wearing the same ratty clothes, though he went out of his way to show off his new plastic shoes when the internet newspaper showed up to take photos in August of the "Cheeseburger in Paradise" fundraiser at the Brannon Center.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Gov. Rick Scott in November appointed private attorney James A. Edwards of Altamonte Springs to a seat on the 5th District Court of Appeal, filling a position that was created by the Florida Legislature earlier this year.

Davd Santiago of dist. 27 / Headline SurferDELTONA -- Phil Giorno had enough headaches as chairman of the Volusia County Democratic Executive Committee when he stepped in to run for the district 27 state representative seat for Dennis Mulder who had to resign because of a family illness.

Because of the timing, though, Mulder's name remained on the ballot per state election laws.

NEW SMYRNA BREACH -- The New Smyrna Beach High School 'Cudas had lots of reasons to be happy during the 2011-'12 school year homecoming game. The football team won big time and Dallas Macdermant and Shanleigh O'dell were named king and queen, respectively.

PIERSON -- Chipper Jones -- the pride of Pierson, Florida --  and a future Hall of Famer for the Atlanta Braves rallied his National League All-Stars in a pre-game speech before they took to the field in Kansas City and shut out their American League counterparts, 8-0.

Edgewater -- Riley Wood was decked out with a homemade Independence Day hat as he arrived wih his parents for the Fourth of July fireworks. Asked if he made the hat," the 6-year-old New Smyrna Beach boy answered, "Yeah, with mommy."

But he didn't take Volusia County for granted in the waning weeks of the elction, making a pitstop in Daytona Beach.
