NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- State Rep. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, announced earlier today that she has abandoned her run to try and unseat Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach, and instead will focus on getting re-elected to her own seat next year.

Erik John Batty, 39, of Edgewater, was charged Oct. 12 with battery on a law enforcement offcer, after allegedly throwing a pillow at a police officer that may have contained communicable germs since he's known to have certain communicable diseases as evidenced in the photo.

EDGEWATER -- Throwing a pillow at a police officer during a disturbance call landed an Edgewater man in jail Sunday on battery charges since the man is known to have commuinicable diseases, police said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Carol Kelley, principal of New Smyrna Beach High School, is out of work indefinitely after undergoing surgery March 3 for a broken pelvis and hip suffered in an earlier car accident, according to the school's Web site.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Robert Rees felt he was being stonewalled on who initiated a proposed pay raise for City Clerk Johnny Bledsoe, prompting him to say "This is bullshit." Bledsoe's proposed pay raise, drafted by city staff, was pulled from the agenda by Mayor Sally Mackay, who said the timing was not right.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Mayor Sally Mackay  said she will pull the agenda item from tonight's City Commission meeting that seeks a raise for City Clerk Johnny Bledsoe, saying in part, "now is not the time to be raising salaries with the budget coming up."

Brady, 58, was found shot to death Sept. 22, 2008, a victim of suicide, but whether he suffocated his 56-year-old wife, Pamela Brady, with a plastic bag in their New Smyrna Beach home or whether she did it herself, remains a mystery. The deaths came after he abruptly resigned from his job as a lawyer with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement after a confrontation with the husband of a co-worker he was having an affair with turned violent. New Smyrna Beach police concluded their investigation in March.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Two brothers, ages 10 and 7, with severe burns on their faces, chests and arms, are hospitalized in critical condition and their motherc ommited under the state's Baker Act, for psychiatric evaluation, New Smyrna Beach police said of the early Monday incident at a duplex in the 400 block of 10th Street.
