NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- City Commissioners voted unanimously tonight to approve a three-year labor agreement with the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local No. 2271, through Sept. 30, 2013, and retroactive to Oct. 1 of this year.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Bert Fish Medical Center Foundation will honor Charlie and Elaine Meyer at its annual National Philanthropy Day Dinner for their generosity in making college more affordable for New Smyrna Beach High School grads.

Dreaded barnacle a nemesis for fishermen and others who keep their boats in salt water

One of the most aggravating nemeses to those having to keep their boats in a salt water environment is the dreaded barnacle. A barnacle is a type of arthropod that is related to crabs and lobsters.

Barnacles are exclusively marine. They therefore tend to live in shallow and tidal waters.. They are sessile suspension feeders, and have two nektonic (marine and freshwater organisms that can swim freely and are generally independent of currents) larval stages. Around 1,220 barnacle species are currently known.

They won a berth in the postseason with a 42-19 drubbing of district foe Viera. 'Cudas Coach Lance Jenkins was pleased as well. Check out our exclusive videos. At left, 2010 Homecoming Queen Kacey Joiner is all smiles before the raucous fans at the NSB Sports Complex, as she and the fans dealt with nightime temps that dipped into the low 50s. Believe it or not, even Coach Jenkins was smiling (OK, maybe not) after the game.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Even 'Cudas Coach Lance Jenkins caught a glimpse of Homecoming during halftime of the New Smyrna Beach romp of Viera that mercifully ended 42-19. The win Friday night at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex before a packed home crowd meant a second consecutive post-season in District 14-4A and first under Jenkins.

Edgewater Public Library holding gardening and geneoology classes this month

EDGEWATER -- Just call it the double G: The Edgewater Public Library, 103 Indian River Blvd., is holding is hosting free classes this month to help residents cultivate their green thumbs, aka gardening, and trace their family roots, aka geneology.

Master gardener Jackie Jones will discuss “Arrangements from the garden” at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9. This is part of a monthly casual gardening series presented by the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension.
