Two killed in plane crash west of New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office located the wreckage earlier this morning of a small plane that crashed in the woods near Lake Ashby east of Deltona and west of New Smyrna Beach. The two occupants, believed to be a flight instructor and a student pilot, died in the crash. Their identities have not been confirmed yet.

The plane, a single-engine Cirrus, is believed to have departed Tuesday afternoon from Orlando Sanford International Airport. Authorities in Seminole County launched

Either we've had a very brief winter and it is time for the snowbirds to go back to the north or more likely Mother Nature is playing tricks on us again, in which case the snowbirds had better sit tight.

Motorist airlifted in early morning NSB crash at S.R. 44 and South Myrtle

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Seven people were taken to Halifax Medical Center this morning after a Chevy Tahoe and a Saturn collided at the intersection of State Road 44 and South Myrtle Avenue, New Smyrna Beach police reported.

The Tahoe flipped in the 7:08 a.m. collision and the driver, 24-year-old Brandon Shackelford of New Smyrna Beach, was airlifted by Sheriff's helicopter to Halifax in Daytona Beach and admitted into the intensive care unit in stable condition. A passenger, 45-year-old Lisa Jones of Deltona, was transported by EVAC ambulance to Halifax.

Sheriff's deputies suspended after police chase in Edgewater while riding motorcycles

Volusia Sheriff's deputy Omar Lopez was arrested on speeding and other motor vehicle-related charges lodged by Edgewater police, including fleeing and eluding, during an attempted motor vehicle stop Tuesday afternoon. Lopez and fellow deputy Austin Litton, who was riding off-duty with him and also ticketed, have been placed on paid administrative leave by the Sheriff's Office.

Man with knife robs busy NSB McDonald's on S.R. 44

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- In the midst of dinner-time customers, a white man man with a scruffy beard armed with a knife hopped over the counter at the McDonald's restaurant on State Road 44 and grabbed a wad of cash from a register before running outside and taking off in a grey or silver vehicle, New Smyrna Beach police said.
