ORMOND BEACH -- The Daytona Beach chapter of the Florida Motion Picture & Television Association will officially re-open 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Cinematique Theater at the Book Store Cafe, 410 S. Nova Road in Ormond Beach.

"I look forward to being in this new meeting place," said FMPTA President Carole Ferrill, who will be on hand to officially re-open and
re-organize the chapter.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach, took action today to protect jobs and stop forced closings of Central Florida automobile dealerships by signing on as an original co-sponsor of the bipartisan Automobile Dealer Economic Rights Restoration Act (H.R.2743).

PONCE INLET -- Volusia County Marine Science Center rehabilitation team members are planning the release of an adult female loggerhead sea turtle called Morgan at 11 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting, said Michelle Coates, a county spokeswoman.

The beachside release will be on the north side of the county’s Winter Haven Park, 4589 S. Atlantic Ave., Ponce Inlet.

From late February through March, the northeast coastline of Florida experienced a dramatic increase in the number of stranded sea turtles.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The City Commission will hold a special meeting 8:30 a.m. at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, 1414 Art Center Blvd., to discuss a plethora of major projects. They include development of last year's Ester Street acreage to help alleviate drainage and provide off-beach parking:

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Build it and they will come, urged residents in support of an upscale hotel complex off Flagler Avenue.

"We need this hotel - we need the impact of this hotel, said Hunter Mann, an owner of the 24 Hour Body Works on U.S. 1., who said he started up his physical fitness center here in January, based on the city's history and charm. "We want this money in our community."

Others, though, were not so sold on the project, with Bill Gallagher, of North Pine Street saying, "We have to be weary of some of the promises."

SAMSULA -- An 81-year-old Massachusetts woman was fighting for her life overnight at Halifax Medical Center after she was flown there earlier Tuesday by a Sheriff's helicopter following a three-car crash on State Road 415, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

ORMOND BEACH -- A man found Monday at the bottom of an Ormond Beach motel pool has been identified by Ormond Beach police as 73-year-old Mikhail Levkovas.

The pool find was made by patrons at the Castillo Del Sol, 205 S. Atlantic Ave., who subsequently called police. Despite life-saving efforts by firefighters, the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at Florida Hospital-Oceanside.

Police did not know why he was in the pol or where he was from.

Albert G. Geiger, 82, of New Smyrna Beach, a former beer salesman and U.S. Navy veteran who received the Asiatic-Pacific; American Theatre; European Theatre; and the Victory medals, died Saturday, June 6, 2009.

Julius Caesar Herrin, 94, of New Smyrna Beach, who worked tirelessly with the American Baptist Home Mission Society in support of integration in public schools, churches and civil rights organizations, died Friday, June 5, 2009.
