State Rep. Dorothy Hukill files paperwork for Congressional seat in 24th district held by Suzanne Kosmas

Courtesy photos. State Rep. Dorothy Hukill, R- Port Orange, announced this morning she is running for the 24th district seat in Congress held by first-term incumbent Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach.

PORT ORANGE – Saying first-term incumbent Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas "voted for trillions in new government spending with no way of paying it back," State Rep. Dorothy Hukill announced today that she has filed paperwork to be a candidate for the 24th district seat in Washington.

Port Orange motorist killed on I-95 in New Smyrna Beach on Fourth of July

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A motorist killed on the Fourth ogf July on Interstate 95 just south of State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach has been identified as a Port Orange man.

Jeffrey Lee Simmons, 52, was identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as the motorist killed on I-95, when he apparently overcorrected his steeering and rolled over his pick-up truck.

Simmons was not wearing his seatbelt and the rollover caused him to be ejected from the vehicle, the FHP reported. He was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after the 3 p.m. accident.

Interim City Manager Khalid Resheidat and Bouchelle Island resident William Koleszar are likely to have major differences of opinion on the proposed $49.29 million fiscal budget for New Smyrna Beach, with two days of hearings starting Wednesday in the Deberry Room at the Utilities Commission Building on Canal Street. Day 1's session begins 8:30 a.m.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The proposed spending budget was a work in progress, throughout the day, before two expected days of heated workshops Wednesday and Thursday, calling for either a 26 percent millage-rate increase. Or if the mill rate remains the same as this year's budget, there's the potential for massive layoffs, allof the above due primarily to a 20 percent decrease in property tax values.

NSB cops: Suspected shoplifter apprehended after swimming across river in attempt to get away

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A larceny suspect swam across the Indian River in an attempt to get away from police just west of the Diamond Head condominiums and ran into the 300 block of Quay Assisi before he was apprehended and arrested Tuesday, police said.
