On this Labor Day weekend: Don't drink while operating a boat

Don’t drink and drive when operating a motor vehicle of any kind. And that includes a boat, especially on this Labor Day weekend when many boaters will be out on the waterways of New Smyrna Beach and throughout Volusia County and off shore along the coastline.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Nineteen-year-old surfer dude Daniel True has earned his red badge of courage and he has a rather large shark bite wound on his right foot to prove it. That's no lie.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Cudas take to the field tonight with second-year coach Lance Jenkins against the Titusville Astronaut squad at New Smyrna Beach Stadium. If Tuesday night's attendance at New Smyrna Beach High School for athletics night was any indication, tonight's home opener should be rocking.

 Karen Lee Burger of New Smyrna Beach missing since July 25

Courtesy photo / Karen Lee Burger, shown here in the larger photo, has not been seen or heard from since July 25 and New Smyrna Beach police need your help in finding her. She is described as white, 5 feet 3 and 120 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She also has a drug problem. Another New Smyrna Breach woman, Jennifer Rado, shown in the smaller photo, who had an addiction to prescription pills, was reported missing in mid-July. Her alleged killer led police to her skeletal remains last month.  

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The disappearance and eventual discovery of the skeletal remains of Jennifer Rado last month sent shock waves through this seaside city, especially because she was married with two kids. And New Smyrna Beach police do not want a repeat of this with fellow resident Karen Lee Burger, missing now for 38 days.

Central Florida News 13 anchor Scott Harris, whose broadcast career spanned 40 years, died Monday of kidney cancer. He was 64.

Not in the news anchor's seat, which he held in the latter part of his career, but as a reporter covering breaking news when he was with Channel 6 and I was with the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

First hotel on beachside in three decades seen as economic engine

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- While officials gave speeches and community leaders posed with golden shovels this afternoon on Flagler Avenue, 1-year-old Bailie Keaton ignored the talk and turned her head in favor of the sound coming from bulldozers and other heavy equipment well into the groundbreaking for the Hampton Inn and Suites, the first major hotel to be constructed on the beachside in three decades for a seaside community that relies on tourism as its lifeline.
