County Council re-affirms support for commuter rail system

The Volusia County Council Thursday reaffirmed its unanimous support for a commuter rail system that is proposed to serve riders through a four-county region that includes Volusia, Seminole, Orange and Osceola counties, county spokesman Dave Byron confirmed.

Volusia Sheriff: Raids topple West Volusia cocaine-traffricking network

DELAND -- Dozens of local, state and federal agents toppled a large-scale drug trafficking organization Monday morning in a series of coordinated raids on a criminal network responsible for distributing massive quantities of cocaine into West Volusia, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

A total of 16 people already are in custody, including 26-year-old Rosheen Cuthrell of DeLand, the reputed head of the organization, along with several of the group’s main drug suppliers, Davidson said.

Daytona's Main Street Bridge reopens

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Main Street Bridge in Daytona Beach reopened to traffic at 3:30 p.m. today following repairs to a faulty limit switch, Volusia County spokeswoman Pat Kuehn reported this afternoon.

The limit switch allows the bridge to open and close for boat traffic, she said.

The bridge had been closed since Friday evening when it became inoperable.

Port Orange cops: Former Warner Christian Academy teacher charged with having sex with minor

PORT ORANGE -- A former Warner Christian Academy teacher was charged earlier today by two police departments with unlawful sexual activity with a minor for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old student over several months in local motels before she abruptly resigned earlier this month.

Cynthia Horvath, 45, was first charged by Port Orange police and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on bail of $10,000.

Reporter's Notebook -- Volusia County: Public input sought on competitive process for beach concessions

The Volusia County Council is seeking public input on the implementation of a competitive process for awarding concession service contracts on Volusia County public beaches, said Michelle Coats, spokeswoman for Volusia County government.

To support this effort a web-based public input questionnaire has been developed to assist the County Council in developing beach concession contract policy, Coats said.

Deltona man stabbed during argument

DELTONA -- A Deltona man was rushed to the hospital after being stabbed in the chest and abdomen early Sunday morning when a domestic argument escalated into a physical fight, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported.

Joshua Hinkley underwent surgery at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for his stab wounds, which were not life threatening, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

Daytona Beach Ocean Center to host NCAA men's regular season basketball tournament

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Ocean Center willone again play host for an NCAA men's opening season basketball tournament Nov. 21-23.

Teams from Marshall University, Morgan State University, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, University of Utah, University of Mississippi and Rollins College will compete in the second annual three-day Glenn Wilkes Classic for the 2008-'09 season. The schedule is as follows:
