DELAND, Fla. -- The Tallahassee lawyer representing the legal interests of Trayvon Martin's parents in the George Zimmerman murder case that resulted in the Sanford gunman's acquittal, is now representing relatives of a black neighborhood barber they feel was deliberately run over and killed by a white DeLand cop who has since been fired.

DELAND -- Stetson University Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote announced that Christophe Noblet has been promoted to associate Head men’s and women’s tennis coach effective today.

“Christophe has done very well so far and is very worthy of this promotion,” Pilote said. “Both the men’s and women’s teams will benefit from his new role within the program."

PAWLEY'S ISLAND, SC – The Stetson men’s golf team got off to a fair start in its first event of the 2013-14 season, but struggled over the next two days at the GolfWeek Program Challenge.

The Hatters opened with a 298 in the first round, but followed up with consecutive rounds of 309 on Monday and 308 on Tuesday to finish last in the 12-team event at the True Blue Course.

It is the second straight year the Hatters have finished 12th in the event.

DELAND -- One of the handguns had been reported stolen to a local police department in 2011, turned up in an annual turn-in-your-gun program with no questions asked.

A total of 58 guns were voluntarily turned in to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in Thursday's annual Kicks 4 Guns crime-fighting program,  which encourages citizens to turn in unwanted guns to law enforcement for safe and proper disposal with no questions asked.

DELAND -- When Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies responded on Aug. 12 to a disturbance call at the intersection of Cassadaga Road and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Beltway near DeLand, they discovered that several people had been arguing on the side of the road over prescription drugs.

Deputies were dispatched to 2535 Cherangela Court after receiving a 9-1-1 call from there about 7 p.m. Friday.

DELAND --  A pair of Stetson baseball players were named to the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, which is selected annually by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

West Volusia Advertising Authority in DeLand chooses new board leaders

DELAND -- The West Volusia Advertising Aurthority has installed new officers on its board of directors. Bill O'Connor was named chair, Sharon Hughes was selected as vice chair and Doug Little as the treasurer. The appointments were made earlier in the day Wednesday.
