DAYTONA BEACH SHORES -- There are moments which stick in your mind, even when you wish they would go away. For the America of my youth, the most crushing of those moments was the assassination of JFK on Nov. 22, 1963. In those days, Jack Kennedy was everyone’s hero, the hope of the future, and virtually everyone over age 10 can remember where they were when they first learned that the President had been shot. For this generation that moment is 9/11.

DELTONA -- 9/11/2001 changed us as a country and people. While it initially brought us together in the aftermath of the attack, we’ve since become a little less trusting and so much more polarized in our politics.

Perhaps as we reflect on the past 10 years and honor those who lost their lives in the attack, we will also remember that which made us such a great nation: our compassion, our courage, and a political will that has well served this country since we declared our independence in 1776.  

9/11/2001 was a hateful monstrous day.

EDGEWATER -- I am as touched by the events of 9/11 as everyone in this country is as I was that horrible day but I don’t think the survivors and families need to be reminded yearly with footage of that disaster and continuous news coverage.

They have never forgotten, most likely never will, but maybe the nightmares have started to diminish somewhat until they turn on a television or look at a newspaper before, during or right after 9/11 whatever year it may beat the time.

We should mark the disaster with the moment of silence of when the first plane hit the Twin Towers. Those people who were there that day should be remembered and they are in the hearts of all the citizens of this country. I personally do not want to watch people jumping from the burning towers or the towers falling ever again. That horrible sight will always be in my head. I don’t need to be reminded what happened that day 10 years ago. Does anyone?

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- We all know the story of 9/11. It’s one of those few moments in our lives that we will remember as a “where I was" moment.

OAK HILL The Volusia County Council unanimously approved an agreement Thursday with Oak Hill to contract out the city’s law enforcement services to the Sheriff’s Office. The contract covers a 13-month period, through September of next year.

EDGEWATER -- The accidental drownings of eight small children so far this year across Volusia County are a vivid reminder of the importance of parental awareness and emergency life-saving training. With that in mind, Edgewater Fire Services, in conjunction with Edgewater Rotary Club, is holding an infant and child CPR class with an emphasis on drowning prevention on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The class begins at 9 a.m. and will go approximately three hours at the Edgewater Rotary facility, 2347 S. Ridgewood in the Pelican Plaza. There is no fee for the class, but size is limited to 30 so please register early by calling 386-424-2445.
