NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Mayor Adam Barringer enters the second year of his initial term with his primary goal unchanged. And that is to work on ways to encourage economic development citywide.

With so much focus in 2010 on Canal Street and Flagler Avenue, which are heavily funded by the Community Redevelopment Agency, the mayor made clear his intent to focus on blighted U.S. 1, also known as Dixie Freeway.

Though Barringer's two-year term was extended by a third year, with his vote, along with the unanimous consent last year of the city commissioners to go to even-year elections, the mayor said he will push hard his second year to further develop his No. campaign promise leading up to his Nov. 2, 2009 election victory over incumbent Sally Mackay, and that is economic development.

With his "mayor's economic development plan" delivered as promised within his first 100 days in office and his establishment of the economic development advisory board, Barringer has his sights set on "creating a boating industry north of town" at the Swoop Site off North Dixie Freeway and across from the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport.
