APOPKA -- A 16-year-old boy on a bicycle was struck and killed by at least one and possibly two vehicles while trying to cross State Road 436, east of Thompson Road, about 8:20 p.m. Monday in an apparent hit-and run, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The victim, identified as Edward Fernandez, was pronounced dead a short time later at Florida Hospital Apopka.

He was not in a crosswalk when he was struck, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Kim Montes said.

A 2000 Ford Mustang and a 2008 Ford pickup left the scene, Montes said, but with the help of eyewitnesses descriptions, an alert Apopka cop was able to locate both vehicles and the drivers who apprently knew each other.

Montes told the Orlando Sentinel, which was first to report the fatality that "the Mustang definitely hit that boy," adding the windshield was shattered and there was red paint on the front of the vehicle, matching that of the bicycle.

Troopers were trying to determine if the pick-up, too, had struck the child.

The names of the drivers of the two suspect vehicles were mot immediately available. An investigation is ongoing, Montes said.
