DAYTONA BEACH -- It wasn't his drug dealing that put him in the slammer for the next decade as much as the piling up of the rap sheet.
So goes the story of Stanley Rhodes Gainey, sentenced Nov. 1 by Circuit Judge R. Michael Hutcheson to 10 years in prison as a "habitual felony offender. And he comes in at No. 71 in the Headline Surfer® countdown of the top 100 stories of 2013.
A Volusia County jury found the 51-year-old Daytona Beach man guilty of sale of a substance in lieu of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony that normally carries a five-year prison sentence.
But as Assistant State Attorney Chris Miller who prosecuted Gainey put it, "due to the defendant's status as an HFO, the maximum was increased to 10 years" and Circuit Judge R. Michael Hutcheson obliged in sentencing Gainey who represented himself at trial.

"This enhanced sentencing for a criminal will help keep one convicted felon away for the maximum time allowable by law," Miller told Headline Surfer®.
In June 2012, the Daytona Beach Police Department arrested Gainey as part of the "Summer Heat" Task Force Operation that focused on drug dealers in high crime areas within the city limits.
