Daytona Beach Spring Break shooting victim dies

DAYTONA BEACH - A 20-year-old Oviedo man shot in the head over the weekend over the weekend while in Daytona Beach for Spring Break has died, police confirmed this afternoon.

Gerold Lee Drosky was pronounced dead Wednesday night at Halifax Health Medical Center. He had been on life since early Saturday after being shot three times during an altercation at the Ocean Sands Hotel, 1024 N. Atlantic Ave. He had rented a room there with friends.

James Nicholas Costa, 27, of Orlando, was charged with attempted murder, but Daytona Beach police said they expect those charges to be upgraded to murder.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood told Central Florida media outlets shortly after the shooting that he didn't expect the victim to survive, based on the nature of his wounds.
