DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Headline Surfer's award-winning journalist racked up 9 more byline stories and top online news site in the 2021 Florida Press Club contest for some of the biggest stories in the Sunshine State and with national implications.

Henry Frederick had more byline-winning stories in 2021 than any other award contest winner in Florida's only journalism competition open to all media outlets.

Florida's only statewide competition showcases the best in daily journalism coverage in breaking news, investigative reporting, politics, sports, the arts, and the ongoing global pandemic.

Frederick won three overall news writing awards - each listing three byline stories -- and a fourth overall award for the website.

Two of the individual writing awards were recognized in two different categories - Breaking News and Sports Writing --  a rarity, considering the high volume of nominated entries by literally dozens of media organizations throughout the Sunshine State.

Here are the three overall writing awards won by Frederick:

• 2021 Florida Press Club, Breaking News, First Place, Henry Frederick, Headline Surfer

-- BREAKING NEWS: Joel Greenberg pleads guilty to paying 17-year-old girl for sex & 5 other felony charges

-- BREAKING NEWS: Sanford firefighter Andrew Williams, who was among pro-Trump rioters in siege of the Capitol, arrested today by the FBI; released on bond by fed judge in Orlando

-- BREAKING: Ex-Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett, who was at the helm during the Trayvon Martin homicide, died earlier today of lung cancer at 52

• 2021 Florida Press Club, Sports Writing, First Place, Henry Frederick, Headline Surfer

-- Upstart Michael McDowell wins 2021 Daytona 500 in last-lap multi-car crash

-- BREAKING NEWS: LA Lakers defeat Miami Heat for league championship in the NBA Bubble in Orlando

- Roman Reigns retains WWE Universal title during 2nd night of Wrestlemania at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium with limited fans due to COVID-19

• 2021 Florida Press Club, Online Independent News Site, Second Place, Henry Frederick, Headline Surfer

• 2021 Florida Press Club, Public Safety, Third Place, Henry Frederick, Headline Surfer

-- BREAKING NEWS: Daytona Beach cops: Speeding Ormond motorist killed, 5 firefighters injured in traffic crash between Pontiac and fire truck

Henry Frederick was the lone reporter in 2021 to win for Joel Greenberg's guilty plea in federal court in Orlando, with his admission to having sex for money with a 17-year-old female escort, in addition to five other felonies involving close to $2 million in taxpayer money.

Henry Frederick was the lone reporter in 2021 to win for Joel Greenberg's guilty plea in federal court in Orlando, with his admission to having sex for money with a 17-year-old female escort, in addition to five other felonies involving close to $2 million in taxpayer money.

While Frederick was the lone reporter to win for coverage of Greenberg's guilty pleas, the Sentinel did win an award in a different journalism contest for a series of podcasts on Greenberg.

Frederick also was the only reporter in the Sunshine State to win an award for the arrest of a Sanford firefighter, who was a participant in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol where he was shown on videos mockingly high-fiving a large sign above the entrance to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office.

This was the sixth consecutive year that Frederick has won for coverage of the Daytona 500. No other reporter has won even once for coverage of the Great American Race.

Frederick has amassed 115 award-winning stories in his journalism career in print newspapers and online since 1996 here in Central Florida with the Daytona Beach News-Journal and with Headline Surfer.

During his near-decade tenure with the Daytona Beach News-Journal, 1996-2004, covering cops and courts, Frederick has received awards from the Florida Press Club, the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors, and Society of Professional Journalists, Florida Chapter, including its James K. Batten Award for Outstanding Public Service for his week-long series in 1998 on life in Spring Hill, an impoverished and crime-ridden enclave on the outskirts of DeLand. Among his biggest crime-related award-winning breaking news stories was witnessing the execution of serial killer, Aileen Wuornos, in Florida's Death Chamber in 2002.

Frederick has won multiple awards every year for the past 10 years from the Florida Press Club, the only reporter in the Sunshine State with that consistent commitment to award-winning coverage over the past decade with his news coverage along the I-4 tourism corridor, from Disney and the Attractions in Orlando to the World's Most Famous Beach in Daytona, as well as surrounding cities in Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties, with a combined population of 2.48 million residents.
