Maryland woman, 30, falls 8 stories to her death from Daytona Beach balcony; 2nd such victim in less than a week

DAYTONA BEACH -- A 30-year-old Maryland woman fell eight stories to her death overnight at a beachside hotel, becoming the second balcony-fall fatality in less than a week, Daytona Beach police said.

Heather Crawford of Frostburg, Md., who had rented a room with her boyfriend at the LaPlaya Resort, 2500 N. Atlantic Ave., was either standing or sitting on the railing of the balcony of just before 3 a.m. when she apparently fell to her death, according to police, who said no foul play is suspected.

A security gauard on the grounds of the hotel heard the landing and found the victim's body near a trash container, police said.

Crawford is the second tourist to die from a balcony fall during this Spring Break season. Last Sunday, a 16-year-old Minnesota boy visiting with his parents, fell 24 stories to his death after stacking several chairs on a balcony at the Ocean Walk Resort in hopes of catching an oceanview sunrise.
