NSB mayor: 'City staff is prepared'

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Mayor Sally Mackay says the city staff is prepared for Tropical Storm Fay.

"As you report, we are expecting increased winds as the storm moves over Central Florida, some gusting to 35 mph, together with heavy rain bands and possible flooding on some roads," Mackay wrote to NSBNEWS.net in an e-mail at 4:45 a.m. "City Hall will be open.  EOC will not be used
other than normal.  Public Works has all its pumps out ready and they are strategically placed in areas of town where flooding might be expected."

The mayor said residents can get sandbags from 124 Industrial Drive with proof of residency and a limit of 20 bags.

Mackay also confirmed that tonight's scheduled City Commission meeting regarding the municipal golf course has been canceled and will be held 5 p.m. Thursday in the DeBerry Room at the Utilities Commission Building.

"I am confident that the City Staff is well prepared, as always, to take good care of our community as this storm passes by," the mayor said.  "My suggestion is that folks stay home and off the roads if possible. If you have to go out... please drive safely. Take care of yourselves.  Hopefully this storm will weaken as it goes across the Peninsular and will have minimal impact on
our area."
