EDGEWATER, Fla. -- Veterans Day is not just a day off  -- nor is it just another Tuesday. It is a special day to pause and remember all those who served in whatever capacity to preserve America's freedom.

This special column commemorating Veterans Day was written exclusively for HeadlineSurfer.com by Volusia County Chair Jason Davis, a combat-wounded veteran, who lives in Pierson.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- On the 11th hour, of the 11th day of 1918, there was a lull in the fighting during World War I. This eventually became what we now call Veterans Day.

This day is different from most holidays that we celebrate for veterans, for this is the day we thank all veterans for their service, and their dedication to the United States of America. I am a veteran myself. I served in places that we still do not discuss, and I have done the things I do not talk about.

Did I do them for recognition? No. Did I do them for fame? No. Did I do these things for a pretty ribbon or badge? No.

The battles I fought, and won, were for the preservation of the American way of life.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- For perhaps the first time in Volusia County history or at least in the last several decades, the Republican Party has a majority on the County Council and the School Board, even though they are deemed non-partisan elected posts per home-rule charter.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Walkers, runners and riders now have a new path to blaze in New Smyrna Beach with Tuesday's opening of the Pedestrian Trail.

So says a press release from the municipality.

The trail spans 2.2 miles from West Pine Avenue just north of S.R. 44 off Mission Road to Sugar Mill Drive.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- This endorsement of Joyce Cusack for re-election in the at-large seat on the Volusia County Council will be short and sweet. Cusack is first class all the way in her dealings with the public and the issues at hand on the dais and in her every-day life.

And that's how it should be. Her challenger, Patricia Northey, has served the county with honor and distinction for many years, but in the last two years, she had come to the realization that her political career was coming to an end.
