DELTONA, Fla. -- A fourth candidate has entered the field to run in the 2014 elections for the District 5 seat on the Volusia County Council representing the Deltona area with incumbent Pat Northey term-limited and instead challenging at-large Council member Joyce Cusack of DeLand. 

Ponce Inlet sidewalk project to be discussed tonight at Town Hall

PONCE INLET -- The Volusia County Public works Department will hold a public meeting 5:30 tonight at Ponce Inlet Town Hall, 4300 S. Atlantic Ave., to present proposed construction plans for the missing link of the sidewalk along the west side of South Atlantic Avenue between Major Street and Marcell Avenue here in Ponce Inlet.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Enjoy the seasonably-warm temperatures near 80 today and Tuesday because by mid-week, it's going to be a lot colder at the World's Most Famous Beach with temps dropping to the low 70s.

Surfers in wet suits will brave the frigid waves, but beach goers in bikinis and speedos will likely be covering up.

DELTONA -- Many Democrats walked away disappointed from the 2013 Florida Democratic Party State Conference all fired up, but somewhat confused when the much anticipated announcement by Charlie Crist's run for Governor was not announced.

Locale of fatality involving victim in wheelchair crossing S. Ridgewood / Headline Surfer®Headline Surfer graphic / Diane Elizabeth was killed Oct. 6, 2009, when she tried to cross traffic-heavy South Ridgewood Avenue in her wheelchair without using a crosswalk, which she had previously been advised by South Daytona cops not to do.

SOUTH DAYTONA -- A 69-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair was struck and killed killed four years ago while trying to cross South Ridgewood Avenue outside of a crosswalk.

It wasn't as if Diane Elizabeth Knoop didn't know better to use the crosswalk. South Daytona cops said she had been warned before to use the crosswalk when trying to cross Ridgewood in her wheelchair.

He was being held without bond.

OAK HILL -- An Oak Hill man was arrested Thursday for child abuse and battery after hitting two of his children during an argument because he believed his teenage girls, 15 and 12, were talking back to him.

The children told responding deputies that before the fight, 53-year-old Jeffrey Cleaves had driven drunk with the teen and a 4-year-old in his vehicle. Volusia County Sheriff's deputies arrested Cleaves for child abuse and battery.
