NEW SMYRNA BEACH - Adam Barringer defeated incumbent Sally Mackay, 3,081 to 2969, or 50.93 percent of the vote, to become New Smyrna Beach's new mayor in the Tuesday general election.

In the other contest, Judy Reiker knocked off first-term Zone 1 City Commissioner Randy Richenberg, 3,127 to 2815, or 52.63 percent, to claim that seat.

"The People have spoken." Barringer said. "This is a new beginning for New Smyrna Beach and I am going to begin tomorrow working on an economic development plan for the entire city within the next 100 days just as I promised during the campaign."

Mackay conceded defeat at 8:05 p.m. with her supporters at her campaign headquarters on canal street. At 8:15 p.m. she arrived at Barringer's restaurant So Napa, in the Publix shopping Center on the beach side.

The two shook hands as she briefly offered congratulations and left without speaking to the media there or at her campaign headquarters.
