NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Roxanne Reynolds Hicks is a big fan of the Art Walk on Flagler Avenue here on the street that has thousands of day trippers from across Central Florida enjoying the artistry and craftsmanship on display.

"There are plenty of merchants on hand with beautiful items available to purchase for Christmas," said Hicks, a city resident and publisher of the New Smyrna Beach Mom blog who writes a weekly blog.

"Buy your gifts locally from the merchants on Flagler Avenue," Hicks stressed.

From pottery to glassware, baskets and rugs, there's something for everyone at the Art Walk, where the street is closed off to vehicular traffic and is a welcoming site for people traffic. And their pets, too, so long as they are leashed and their owners have necessary items to clean up after them on the spot.

Festivals, arts and craft shows, ethnic events and fine art exhibits on Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach are held throughout the year and underwritten in large measure by the Southeast Volusia Advertising Authority, from funds collected from bed taxes for overnight hotel and condo rental receipts.

The events also are paid in large measure by the New Smyrna Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, which is funded through residential and business property taxes collected by the county and set aside for local CRA agencies for community projects, with a main emphasis on blight, though the latter is seldom accomplished.
