NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The editorial board of the Orlando Sentinel in its Monday editions endorsed the candidacy of prosecutor Matt Foxman over longtime attorney George Pappas for a circuit court judgeship in the August primary. The judgeship is held by retiring Circuit Judge S. James Foxman at the New Smyrna Beach-based Volusia County Courthouse Annex on Riverside Drive. The elder Foxman is retiring.

Here is what the Sentinel wrote: Two Seabreeze High grads are contesting a seat in a circuit that covers Volusia, Flagler, Putnam and St. Johns counties. Matt Foxman is the stronger choice to replace his father, Judge S. James Foxman, who is retiring. Not that Mr. Foxman clings to bloodlines. He's prosecuted some 50 jury trials. And his experience in securing convictions in high-profile murder cases sharpened the skills he'll need on the bench. His opponent, former prosecutor George Pappas, knows his way around a courtroom. Since 1990, he's practiced criminal defense, family law, and civil litigation, and is a court mediator. Both are qualified but Mr. Foxman brings vigor and a vision for boosting efficiency through technology. The Sentinel endorses Matt Foxman.
