Winn-Dixie to close one store in Deltona; NSB and Edgewater stores spared as part of major restructuring

DELTONA -- The Winn-Dixie at 1200 Deltona Blvd. is among 30 stores in the Southeast that are closing as part of a restructuring, the Jacksonville-based grocery giant announced Thursday.

The Winn-Dixie on State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach and the store on U.S. 1 in Edgewater are not affected by the closings, which are expected to be completed by Sept. 22, the company said in a press release.

Company CEO and president Peter Lynch cited a continuing downturn in the national economy that has resulted in sluggish sales as the reason to beef up sales at more profittable locations.

Winn-Dixie estimates long-term savings at $12 of $17 million, after an initial cost of $35 to $50 million, including the loss of 120 jobs in the field and corporate support staffs.

Winn-Dixie, founded in 1925, has 514 stores in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Deltona, Volusia County's largest city, will still have two other Winn-Dixie stores among its 14 locally, including DeLand with three stores, followed by two in Palm Coast and stores in Daytona Beach Shores, DeBary, Edgewater, Holly Hill, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach and Port Orange.
