Mass of Christian Burial for Charles Michael Shawen, age 87, of New Smyrna Beach, who died Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Smyrna Beach, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach. Burial will follow at Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery, Edgewater. Calling hours will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, September 3 at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach chapel.
Born in Oakton, Virginia, Mr. Shawen moved to this area in 1999 from Bethesda, Maryland. A U.S. Army combat engineer serving during WWII, he retired from the Army reserves. His career took him from Smith Corona Typewriter Company, to sales and service for Marchant Calculators, from which he retired after 26 years. He then sold advertising for the Kendrick Company advertising agency. Mr. Shawen attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach, was a life member of the American Legion and VFW, and coached little league baseball.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Thelma; son, Michael Shawen and his wife Patricia, of New Smyrna Beach; daughter, Karen Pierson and her husband Mark, of Clarksburg, Maryland; sister, Helen Forbes, of Marion, Virginia; and 3 grandchildren, David Shawen, Erin Reynolds, and Thomas Hughes.
