Tony Owens, 21, of New Smyrna Beach, wanted on a warrant charging him with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Cliff Dallas Baker, 26, of Oak Hill, early Saturday, was apprehended at the Wal-Mart later that night at the Wal-Mart in Ormond Beach.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The 21-year-old New Smyrnan wanted on a first-degree murder warrant in the early Saturday morning shooting death of an Oak Hill man in the 600 block of Greenlawn Street was apprehended without incident later that night at the Wal-Mart in Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach police said.
Tony Owens was being held without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
The victim, 26-year-old Cliff Dallas Baker, died from multiple gunshot wounds shortly after he was transported to Bert Fish Medical Center, following the 2:44 a.m. shooting in the 600 block of Greenlawn Street, which piolice believe is drug-related.
A person who knows both of them and asked NSBNEWS.net to remain anonymous said the victim was the agressor and the gunman "just snapped," shooting the Oak Hill man at least six times. Both the accused killer and the cictim have been in and out of prison for cocaine possession.
Here is a synopsis of what happened after police reported Baker's death and obtained a warrant for Owens as reported by Detective Sgt. Eugene Griffith: At 10:30 p.m. Saturday, 1521 W. Granada Blvd. (Wal-Mart) Ormond Beach, "police took Tony Owens into custody during the on-going murder investigation of Cliff Dallas Baker. Owens was traced to the Ormond Beach Wal-Mart during the investigation, where evidence of the crime was believed to be recovered from the vehicle he was apprehended in. It is believed Owens was receiving assistance from several subjects, in his effort to evade capture. Additional arrests are forthcoming, as several persons are believed to have been directly assisting Owens before and after the murder of Baker. "
