South Daytona tikes not too young to learn fire safety

SOUTH DAYTONA -- In honor of National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 3 – Oct. 9) the South Daytona Fire Department is hosting student safety tours at the fire station at 1672 S. Ridgewood Ave. through the first week of November.

Students from participating elementary and preschools are shown a safety video, play fire-safety games, get an up-close view of a fire engine and safety equipment and -- the highlight of the event -- take turns squirting a real water hose at a pretend fire.

This year’s national theme is “Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With,” fire department Lt. Sandi Smitherman said.

“The goal is to teach children fire safety and what to do in case of a fire,” Smitherman said. “Although there may be smoke alarms in homes, many children don’t know what to do when they hear one.”
