NSBNEWS.net endorses Republican Pam Bondi for Florida Attorney General over Democrat Dan Gelber in Tuesday's general elections.
Don't let her youthful appearance fool you. Pam Bondi, a Republican, is a veteran prosecutor and worthy of the public's vote for the demanding job as attorney general, Florida's chief law enforcer. For the record, she's 44 and has been prosecuting cases in Hillsborough County for nearly 19 years. Her Democratic opponent, Dan Gelber, is a state senator from South Florida and a former federal prosecutor.
In a televised debate in the studios of Central Florida News 13 last month, Republican Pam Bondi looked right described herself an outsider looking to uphold the laws of the state while looking right at Gelber, who had said he wanted to change the system, to which she replied: "Dan, you are the system!"
He glared back, speechless. That resonated with us.
My colleague, Peter Mallory, is particularly excited because she shares his ideology: "Pam is a solid conservative, who will push to block Obama-care. Gelber thinks Obam-care is wonderful and will not try to block it. This is a no-brainer for conservatives."
Outgoing Attorney General Bill McCollum, who lost the Republican primary for governor to Rick Scott, has been on record as saying he would challenge the legality of the president's health-care plan narrowly approved by Congress. Bondi, a talk-talking prosecutor, said she would, too, if elected.
We would hope that Bondi would, however, tone down the rhetoric about immigration reform that McCollum had waffled on. Gelber rightfully warns of racial profiling issues with such legislation.
Overall, NSBNEWS.net supports the candidacy of Pam Bondi and endorses her in Tuesday's general elections.
NSBNEWS.net is the only Volusia County-based media outlet to hand out endorsements for the general elections. The Orange County-based Orlando Sentinel has done so as well. Our endorsements resulted from collaboration and debate between NSB News LLC's publishers, Henry Frederick, a registered Democrat, and Peter Mallory, a registered Republican, for posting on NSBNEWS.net and our new countywide website VolusiaNews.net.
