Sharon Luebbers of New Smyrna Beach is to be commended for her door-to-door campaigning with very little resources for the district 3 seat on the Volusia County School, but nothing has changed since the Aug. 24 primary for us to support her over our incumbent Stan Schmidt of Port Orange, who received 42 percent of the vote in what was then a three-way race
With declining enrollments, Schmidt's experience is more important than ever in representing the interests of Southeast Volusia and greater Port Orange.
Luebber's criticism of Schmidt for voting with the majority close several local schools is fair game to raise, but the former art teacher has not offered an alternative plan to cut costs.
Schmidt an accountant seeking his second term on the school board, is experienced in crunching numbers. More than ever, analysis of ever-shrinking state funding means either cutting programs, jobs and extracurricular programs even further.
Schmidt's experience cannot by emphasized enough. Again, Luebbers ran a campaign with class and dignity, but at the end of the day, "Stan is the man" for the job.
