Woman struck and killed by freight train in Daytona Beach; girl critically injured with broken bones

DAYTONA BEACH -- A freight train struck and killed a woman woman and critically injured a girl with her Saturday morning at West International Speedway Boulevard near Charles Street, emergency officials said.

The two were struck on or near the tracks by the northbound train at 11:30 a.m. and were found by rescuers less than a hundred feet from the railroad crossing arms. The woman was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics and the girl was rushed to Halifax Medical Center with broken bones, fire spokesman Larry Stoney confirmed.

No names were released and the accident is being investigated by police with the Florida East Coast Railway.
