EDGEWATER -- In 2003, Edgewater Fire-Rescue, in conjunction with Edgewater Fire-Rescue Association, began to expand the Operation Caring program, said Jill Danigel, Edgewater Fire-Rescue captain and spokeswoman.
For many years, both organizations had been active in providing food and toys to children and families during the holiday season through the Operation Santa program.
Edgewater Fire Chief Stephen Cousins described Operation Caring as “a year round program which will include providing assistance to residents and visitors who may be devastated by a crisis.” Again this year that “crisis” can include a family that is not able to provide Christmas gifts or a holiday meal for their loved ones.
Donations of new, unwrapped toys are being accepted at Station 55 (1605 South Ridgewood Ave.), Station 57 (2628 Hibiscus Drive) and City Hall (104 North Riverside Drive).
Wrapping supplies will also be accepted. There is also a need for non-perishable food and personal care items that will be given to families with children as well as the elderly.
Monetary donations are accepted as well – checks can be made Edgewater Fire-Rescue Association (EFRA). Donations of food, toys and money will be accepted without deadline. All of these items will be distributed to people in the Edgewater area.
The primary distribution dates of December 16, 17 and 18 have been scheduled. Any remaining food and toys will be dispersed prior by the end of the day on Dec. 24.
Any remaining monetary donations will be placed into the year round Operation Caring fund to meet crisis related needs that arise throughout the year.
This year signups for assistance will be held at the Fire Administration office of Edgewater Fire Rescue (1605 South Ridgewood Ave.) on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
One evening sign up will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23.
Applicants must provide the following: Picture ID for head of the household, social security cards for everyone in the household, proof of need (WIC, Medicaid, paycheck stub) and proof of Edgewater address.
