ORMOND BEACH -- Pedro Lemos resigned his position as an Ormond Beach cop in December amid an internal affairs investigation into allegations he interfered with Holly Hill police giving his girlfriend a ticket.
The allegations, first reported by WFTV Channel 9 The officer who pulled over the underage drinker said he told her not to call her police officer boyfriend, but as he walked back to his patrol car to run her license that's exactly what she did. The dispute happened along US-1 in Holly Hill. The driver said she'd been drinking and called Ormond Beach Officer Pedro Lemos for help. Lemos came to the scene and tried to get her out of a ticket, WFTV reported.
"Our officers enforce the law fairly but firmly, regardless of who is involved," Holly Hill police Cmdr. Mark Barker told WFTV. "This officer inserted himself into a situation that was outside of his jurisdiction."
Holly Hill police said the officer complained about the incident, saying it's happened twice, according to the TV station, adding that that Lemos tried once before to get another friend off the hook with the same officer.
"The police department's system of policing ourselves was working in this case," Ormond Beach police spokesman Sgt. Kenny Hayes told WFTV. "Allegation(s) came to light and it was fully investigated."
