NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 38-year-old city man was arrested Tuesday on armed burglary charges after he was caught stealing copper from the former New Smyrna Beach High School, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Here is a synopsis of what led to the 9:08 a.m. arrest, according to a report by police Sgt. Eugene Griffith: Officers responded to 100 Barracuda Blvd, the old New Smyrna Beach High School property, in reference to a burglary in progress. Responding units located and arrested Chad Johnson after finding him on the property with a backpack full of copper wire, which was taken from the vacant school. Johnson was also found to be armed with a hatchet and in possession of burglary tools."

Johnson was charged with armed burglary, possession of burglary tools and dealing in stolen property. He was later taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail where he was being held oin lieu of $8,000 bail.
