DAYTONA BEACH -- A man found chained to a tree at 10 this morning by his own doing off of Nova Road near Bellevue was transported to Halifax Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation and for medical care associated with being out in the cold weather, Daytona Beach police said.

Here is a synopsis of what happened as reported by Daytona Beach police spokesman Investigator Jimmie Flynt: "Earlier today the police responded to Bellevue and Nova Road in regards to a man chained to a tree. The male had one leg chained to a tree. Fire Department cut the chain loose and he was transported to Halifax Hospital via EVAC. He had been exposed to the cold weather and he also had other medical issues."

The man was taken to the hospital under the state's Baker Act, which allows for him to be committed for for psychiatric evaluation if authorities deem him to be a danger to himself or others.

The man "admitted to chaining himself to the tree," Flynt said, but added "there was no criminal act involved."

Because of patient confidentiality related to the psychiatric issue, Flynt said no other information about him would be released.
