ORMOND BEACH -- Police were called Sunday afternoon after a group of people who were operating all terrain four-wheelers in a dried up canal bed saw what appeared to be a human skull protruding from the mud.

Officers responding to the area confirmed the find to be human remains, police spokesman Lt. Keny Hayes said. Crime scene units from the Ormond Beach Police Department and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the scene.

Ormond Beach detectives as well as investigators from the State Attorney’s Homicide Investigation Unit and the Medical Examiner’s Office were on site as the remains were excavated by crime scene personnel.

"The remains which were in an advanced state of decomposition are now in the custody of the Medical Examiner’s Office and an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning," Hayes said. "At this time there is no information available on the gender or age of the remains or how long they may have been at the site."

More information will be released as the investigation moves forward, Hayes said. For now the case is being investigated as a suspicious death. Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Ormond Beach Police @ 677-0731 or Crimestoppers @ 277-TIPS or 1-888-277-TIPS.
