NSB cops: Deltona motorcyclist struck and killed by Jeep on S.R. 44 near I-95 ramp; passenger critically injured

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 61-year-old motorcyclist was killed last night and his passenger critically injured in a collision with a Jeep, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Gregory Dale Stanley of Deltona was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:46 p.m. Friday accident on State Road 44, near the north-bound ramp to Interstate 95. His passenger, Nina Jean Hargis, 50, of Cocoa was transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where her condition was critical.

Police did not indicate whether either of them were wearing helmets.

Here is a synopsis of what happened as reported by Sgts. Valerie Joyce and Christopher Roos: The motorcycle was traveling west on S.R. 44 when the Jeep, which was east on 44, made a left turn to enter onto the I-95 north bound ramp. The Jeep struck the motorcycle, causing the operator and his passenger to be thrown from the motorcycle.

Police didn't release specific informaton on the type of motorcycle such as year, make and model nor did they release anything further about the Jeep or the operator, who was not injured.

The Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit was notified and responded to take over the investigation, police said.
