ORMOND BEACH -- Police are are continuing their investigation into a Feb. 23 burglary at a business within blocks of the police station.

Officers in the police station parking lot heard a loud noise just after 5 am that Wednesday followed by an audible burglar alarm. As they drove to investigate they discovered a smash and grab type burglary had just occurred at Buddy’s Home Furnishings at 96 S. Yonge St. and a vehicle was leaving the scene.

Officers quickly engaged the vehicle and began pursuing it eastbound on Central Ave. The suspect vehicle, a blue 2003 Dodge Ram pick-up truck, attempted to elude the officers by turning down several side streets. The pick-up truck turned into a service road at one point and then began backing up to turn around but struck the front end of one of the pursuing patrol cars causing $2,000 in damage to the right front fender.

The pick-up truck then continued backing down Jefferson Street towards U.S.1 with another patrol car following. The suspect driver then slammed on the brakes causing the other patrol car to hit the pick-up truck. This patrol car sustained about $1,500 in damage to the front fender area.

The pick-up truck continued backing at a high rate of speed on Jefferson Street before crashing into a power pole. The driver ran from the truck on foot into a residential area. A second suspect was possibly involved. They were not found despite a large-scale search with the assistance of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s Air One helicopter.

The recovered truck had several flat screen TV’s loaded into the bed. The truck was later discovered to have been stolen out of South Daytona. The investigation is continuing.
