Edgewater Fire Services: Suspicious package in mailbox handled by Volusia County Sheriff's bomb squad

EDGEWATER -- A suspicious package in a mailbox just before noon Wednesday turned out to be a hoax, but not befoe tying up public safety personnel for several hours.

Police and firefighters responded to a homeowner's call to the 1300 block South Riverside for a report of a suspicious package.

"South Riverside Drive was closed from Thomas Street to Orange Avenue as members of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad investigated the contents of the package," Edgewater Fire Services spokeswoman Capt. Jill Danigel said. "The residents in the area remained sheltered in their homes during that investigation."

The road re-opened at 2:50 p.m. after it was determined the homemade device was a hoax. Officials did not release specific details about what was found as an investigation by Edgewater police continues.
