The silence of Exxon and Republican greed shameful

Exxon profits this spring were $11 billion in three months. With gas prices at record numbers and the average family cost to fill a minivan at $70, why are the Republicans still fighting to keep the subsidies for oil companies?

$11 billion is nothing to sneeze at. That is not $11 billion in one year: it is in three months. That is profit -- not overall sales. I personally enjoy and agree with a capitalistic free enterprise mindset but when are we going to see it for what it really is? American greed.

It is highly unethical for anyone to demand a hand out on the backs of the American people while amassing unscrupulous levels of wealth.

Cutting "poor" services and education in some areas to balance the budget is one thing. Yet, offering handouts to the rich and Republicans lapping it up and stating it will help the economy is unadulterated malarkey.

Who would the $11 billion actually go to?

If you do not own stock in Exxon, I promise you, it will not be to you or me.

If politicians are going to agree to the subsidies demand they hire X amount of Americans who were put out of work by the votes to give big tax breaks to companies who outsourced. If they oil companies want something, what are they willing to give up?

I give up my free time, resources, ideas, energy, and money to give back to a community of teens in return for space. What the heck is Exxon giving up? $11 billion in profits in a three-month spans sure sounds like they are far from suffering.

Siding with Democrats is one thing I have never been accused of. Yet, Vermont Democratic Congressman Peter Welch says it best: "The goal is… to save taxpayer dollars and there are real questions – what sense does it make to give a trillion-dollar-profit industry more money out of the taxpayers’ pocket.”

The real sense is to win the election in 2012 when those same companies poor millions into the pockets of those supporting them now. Even if it means, we, as Americans, suffer. How patriotic of them!

I am ashamed to call myself a Republican today.
