Computers and the operating systems with them can drive you insane

Computers! They sit on your desk or lap and quietly drive you completely insane! If any of you have noticed my absence recently you can chalk it up to computer defiance.

I have a desktop that I use most of the time which crashed. Then I turned to my laptop which promptly gave me the Blue Screen of Death. My Mom had an old tower she wasn’t using so I brought it to my house and proceeded to be frustrated by its being slower than dial up ever was at loading programs.

Many hours were spent with programs not responding and freezing up the darn thing. Then it crashed, too. I suspect a computer conspiracy since one of these days I am sure they will rule the world and we will be their slaves.

Fortunately, my best friend knows more about computers than me so she came down and worked for five hours and got the slow one running again. She tried to get past the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) but was unable to manage that and we both quit for the day.

I at least had a slow but functional computer if I kept my patience which is not my strong suit. My Mom is visiting me for a while and she brought her laptop so I can use that now until we get all the others straightened out.

Last week my friend came back down and we discovered that the motherboard of my laptop and its hard drive are fried.

I was wishing I had all my information from that hard drive with all my blogs on it and we discovered that I had been smart enough to set up my Norton antivirus to online backup so I was able to restore my pictures and blogs and more on the slow desktop.

She got past the BSOD, but the only solution there was to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch. Unfortunately, my Mom had bought me this laptop knowing not much about computers and it came with Vista, which I hate.

Right after I got it, I had a computer tech put XP on it because I prefer that operating system. Now I am back to Vista and reinstalling everything as if it were brand new and for some unknown reason it will not talk to the network so I cannot get online.

Not at all fun!

My friend returns tomorrow to see if she can get that fixed. We are looking at whether a new motherboard and faster processor will be cheaper or more expensive than buying a more updated tower.

Being on disability, funds are tight so that is not a priority.

So if you pass my house and see two computer towers and a laptop all torn apart and on the lawn, you’ll know my patience gave out and I tossed the darn things out the window!
