Edgewater qualifying: No opposition allows two incumbents to return to city council

Edwater Councilwoman Gigi BenningtonEdgewater Councilman Gene EmterGigi Bennington and Gene Emter had no opposition in qualifying for their seats Friday on the Edgewater City Council.

EDGEWATER -- Incumbents Gigi Bennington and Councilman Gene Emter have been returned to their respective seats on the Edgewater City Council because no one else challenged them in the 2012 elections.

With qualifying ended noon Friday, Bennington, of district 2, and Emter, of district 4, were awarded four-year terms.

Bennington was first elected in 2007, and Gene Emter in a special election earlier this year to fill the seat held by Ted Cooper who died suddenly of a heart attack in November.

A special election will be held Nov. 6 to fill the seat being vacated by first-term incumbent Justin Kennedy who is running for the district 3 seat on the Volusia County Council. The qualified candidates are Christine Power and James Paul Brown.

Kennedy had to resign his seat effective in November because of his run for county council against New Smyrna Beach City Commissioner Jim Hathaway and New Smyrna Beach resident and former elected Volusia County School Board member Deb Denys.

Headline Surfer could find no campaign finance reports or qualifying paperwork on any of the qualified candidates on the Edgewater City website. All that was available were the following links with very limited information:
