Preliminary investigation: Speeding may have been a factor in fatality

DELTONA -- A 20-year-old DeBary man became Volusia County's first highway fatality of the new year when he lost control of his motorcyle on DeBary Avenue near the intersection of Providence Boulevard and struck a stop sign before crashing the bike, a Sheriff's spokesman said.

The victim was identified as Ricardo Rodriguez, Jr. Here is a synopsis of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday fatal accident as summarized by Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught: At approximately 12:30 p.m. a motorcycle with a single occupant was traveling eastbound on DeBary Avenue and lost control near its intersection with Providence Boulevard. The driver struck a curb and then a stop sign. Preliminarily, it appears that speed was a factor and the driver was not believed to have been wearing a helmet.

Rodriguez was transported by EVAC ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City and pronounced dead there at 1:50 p.m.
