NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 26-year-old petty criminal robbed a woman of cash and medicine at gunpoint Wednesday night, but he couldn't outrun the long arm of the law even after ditching his getaway car, New Smyrna Beach cops said.

Eddie Selph was taken down by a K-9 dog and arrested after a brief chase through a wooded area and charged with armed robbery. Here is a synopsis of what happened in the 11:09 p.m. pursuit as described by Sgt. Valerie Joyce: Regina Krouse, 36, told cops she had been robbed at gunpoint of cash and prescriptions at 218 N. Dixie Freeway.

Selph then took off in an orange SUV that had two women inside.Within minutes, the vehicle was located in the area of Hidden Pines and State Road 44. While trying to make a stop, Selph bolted from the SUV and ran into nearby woods. That's when the police dog was unleashed on him.

No other information was released.

Selph's claim to fame was being part of a drug rip-off in 2009 that ended in the shooting death of 25-year-old Jeremy Markley who was unaware that Selph's friend, Henry Wheeler had ripped off a drug dealer sand that's why they were being chased through the streets of New Smyrna Beach before the lead vehicle pulled in behind Jan and Lib's Hi Tops lounge in Edgewater where Markley was left to die.

The victim was celebrating his 25th birthday by drinking with Selph, Wheeler and Wheeler's girlfriend, Christa Carroll when Wheeler ripped off Melvin Brown Jr. unbeknownst to the victim as they piled into his SUV that he bought earlier that day. Brown was convicted of first-degree murder last year and sentenced to life in prison.

Court records accessed online show Selph was convicted of DUI and reckless driving in 1994 and for failure to appear in court on a misdemeanor in 1995. Several other misdemeanor charges, including a battery, against Selph in the last several years have been dropped.
