EDGEWATER -- This gun control issue has me in a quandary. While I myself do not currently own a firearm I have considered buying one and learning how to shoot it.
With the plethora of home invasions, robberies in broad daylight in the parking lots of major busy shopping centers and tragedies like in Sandy Hook Elementary School the idea of protecting oneself is getting stronger daily. I have never agreed with taking away the peoples guns. Most gun owners are responsible, sensible persons.
They keep their guns away from their children and teach them the dangers of guns.
When I was growing up all my male relatives owned guns and were avid hunters. While I used to chastise my Father about killing Bambi I knew they would hunt anyway and they did. I don’t recall seeing any guns except as they were leaving to hunt or returning from one.
Later in life, venison fed my uncle’s family whom I was living with at the time through the winter. Hunting for food has been something we humans have done since the beginning of our existence. Can’t do that without the guns.
Had the teachers of Sandy Hook had their own weapons this kid would have been stopped in his tracks and so many wouldn’t have died.
My cousin brought up an interesting point the other day as we discussed this. She said if they don’t want guns in schools why not have every teacher have a taser?
That would stop someone with bad intent where they stood and avoid his/her death and hopefully anyone else. Sounds like a plausible idea to me.
I don’t think kids need to be in armed guarded schools with metal detectors and other “protections” which just scares them or worse desensitizes them since violence is the norm even in school. The violence all around us is not good but will not stop.
Video games, if you ban them, will just go underground.
Ban guns and then only the criminals who get them illegally will have them and we definitely do not want that. We tried banning alcohol once and you know how that went. Why do we think banning guns would go any better?

I see no reason for the average citizens to possess an assault weapon but ban one ban all. Won’t work. Those criminals who want an assault weapon will only get one from a black market that would immediately spring up so what would that law accomplish? Nothing, except to make things worse. So the quandary continues in my head; to have a gun, not to have a gun.
Would I feel safer? Years ago a friend gave me a pistol because I lived alone. He was a newspaper carrier at the time and my house was halfway through his route so he had a key and would make a pit stop there, make coffee and fill his thermos, rest for a few minutes then quietly leave and lock me back in again as I slept.
After a couple of weeks, I made him take the gun back because I was worried he might be who I shot if I woke up and heard someone in my house and reacted without thinking.
I still remember that worry. If I had one and my Mom started wandering during the night and woke me would I do her harm without thinking first? It’s a scary thought for me I worked in a nursing home on 3-11 shift years ago and our night R.N. supervisor was an old cracker girl.
She carried her pistol in her purse and if someone tried to come into the facility she would aim her pistol at him/her and they would flee. Sometimes all she would do was yell through the door that she had the gun and they ran. She was gutsy and for many, many years the administrators never knew she even had the gun.
My best friend has guns in her house and knows how to use them. She gets out her shotgun if someone threatens her home, her family or her person and all who know her know you don’t just drop in without identifying yourself loudly to her or you may end up in the ER with a bullet in your butt.

Yes, she gets scared but she also is comforted knowing she can protect herself. So many pro’s and con’s I just don’t know what I will do.
I do know I would never be in favor of gun control.
