Rolex 24 at Daytona red flagged by horrific crash

Memo Gidley and Matteo Malucelli were admitted to Halifax Health Medical Center after a horrific crash less than three hours into the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway, after Gidley's No. 99 Corvette DP slammed into the Malucelli's Ferrari 94 laps into the 24-hour race on Daytona's infield road course.
 

DAYTONA BEACH -- Less than three hours into the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway and the endurance race had to be red flagged -- stopped for 90 minutes-- by a horrific crash that sent to drivers to Halifax Health Medical Center.

Memo Gidley and Matteo Malucelli were admitted to Halifax Health Medical Center after a horrific crash less than three hours into the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway, after Gidley's No. 99 Corvette DP slammed into the Malucelli's Ferrari 94 laps into the 24-hour race on Daytona's infield road course.

Gidley was taken directly to Halifax Health Medical Center after he was cut out from the mingled car by rescue workers.

Malucelli, who was able to get out of his car on his own was taken to the infield care center and then transported to Halifax Hospital.

The race was red-flagged while rescue workers tended to both drivers. This was the first red flag since 2004, when heavy rainfall brought the rce to a temporary halt.

Both drivers were reported to be be conscious and alert.
